Former CM Ashok Chavan resigns: In yet another blow to the Congress’s Maharashtra branch months ahead of the Lok Sabha and state elections, former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan announced his resignation on Monday. There were rumors that Ashok Chavan will become a member of the BJP.

Ashok Chavan, a senior leader in the Congress, has left the organization. After meeting Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar, Chavan tendered his resignation. Rumors have said that Ashok Chavan will join the BJP. Chavan is a well-known Maharashtra Maratha Congress leader who has served as chief minister. The first term Ashok Chavan served as the state’s chief minister lasted from December 2008 to November 2009. From November 2009 to November 2010, Chavan served as Maharashtra’s chief minister during his second time in office.

The resignation of veteran Congressman like Ashok Chavan before the Lok Sabha elections is being said to be a big blow to the party. Before Chavan, senior Mumbai Congress leader and close to the Gandhi family Milind Deora has also resigned. The party was still recovering from the recent resignation of Baba Siddiqui, till then the resignation of another big leader has increased the party’s problems in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis responded, “Several leaders of the Opposition want to join the BJP,” in response to questions regarding reports that Ashok Chavan might join the BJP. Since they feel stifled in their party, many Congress leaders have been in touch with us.

Three Congress MLAs—Subhash Dhote, Jitesh Antarpurkar, and Amar Rajurkar—are reportedly inclined to follow Ashok Chavan’s example, according to party insiders.

Ashok Chavan’s father has also been the Chief Minister. Chavan’s father Shankar Rao Chavan was a veteran leader and served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Ashok Chavan from Nanded was also a Lok Sabha MP between 2014 and 2019. After the resignation of Ashok Chavan, there are lines of concern in the camp of Maharashtra Congress. There are reports that the current President of Maharashtra Congress Nana Patole has left for Delhi.

Following the resignation of the former Maharashtra chief minister, the state’s deputy chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, stated that, “let’s see what happens in the future” and that “many big leaders of other parties want to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, especially many leaders of the Congress.” According to Fadnavis, there is a sense of suffocation within the Congress party and many officials are upset with the party’s leadership. Fadnavis has stated that other leaders’ names will be made public shortly.
